Migratory Bird Day: Youth-led Citizen Science with the Nature Guardians

Date/Time

Saturday, May 9, 2020
8:00 am - 11:00 am

Description

World Migratory Bird Day celebrates a migratory bird’s spectacular migration between winter and summer grounds. This year, the theme for Bird Day is “Protect Birds: Be the Solution to Plastic Pollution”. So, on May 9th, our Nature Guardians Chapter will conduct some early-morning bird surveys along the trails in Shubie Park and continue work on our ongoing water quality monitoring project. We know there are microplastics in the water samples we retrieve from Charles and MicMac Lakes. We also see a connection between our aquatic invertebrate findings and the lack of aerial insectivore birds at Shubie. We plan to inventory our findings so they can be submitted to platforms like iNaturalist, eBird, and shared directly with our partners conducting  valuable environmental research in Nova Scotia. Join us for a fun day of science and birdwatching!

We’ll meet a little earlier than usual for this event, at 8am outside the Fairbanks Centre.
