PhotosFebruary 26, 2014February 26, 2014 Lyse got us thinking about the key things to prepare for if lost in the woods. Crossing the stream to get to the hemlock stand where we could build shelters. We arrived at a section of woods that the SAR volunteers use to train people, including in shelter building. Lyse asking YNC members to think of features that make good shelters. Shelter #1 made use of a big awesome rock, which provides shelter from the wind, and neat little crevices. Notice the branch and pine needle “rug.” Shelter #2 had some very thoughtful engineering – drip lines to avoid water in the shelter, and heavy logs to ground it. Shelter #2’s mascot. Shelter #2 could easily fit 4 or more YNC members. Shelter #3 was spacious, and had a campfire set up near by. Shelter #4 made use of a fallen tree. It also had a removable branch to adapt to weather conditions! YNC members tested out using a garbage bag as an instant, personal shelter. Garbage bags are actually pretty cozy! The SAR folk brought out some instant shelters for us to try. Even YNC parents gave the instant shelters a try – this is a view from the inside. On our way out of the woods we saw a large spider in the snow!
