October 19th 2013 BERYNC Nature Journaling @ Black Rock Community Trails

The Berwick Young Naturalists had a lovely brisk fall day for our Nature Journaling @ the Black Rock Community Trails. Thanks to the Community Centre for letting us use the great facilities for the morning. We had 16 children and 10 parents attend this event.

We learned about the value of Nature Journaling to scientific research from Dr. John Brazner (NS Dept. Environment) and Dr. Nick Hill (Ecological Consultant). Nature Journaling is a personal expression that can use all of your senses ie. what you see, hear, smell and feel when you are out in Nature. Anyone can make a Journal to record nature using drawings or etchings, pasting leaves, spore prints or other specimens, making maps of excursions, labeling what you see and of course writing about what you see in prose or poetry. Each Young Naturalist personalized their own Journal provided by the YNC and then we went out in to the wood (with hunter orange of course) to record what we found. Many drawings and etchings were made of beautiful fall leaves from many tree species in the area and some animal signs were seen such as pileated woodpecker holes in snags and salamanders. Some Young Naturalists took mushrooms home to spore print.
