Salamanders (and frog) of the Heart-shaped Pond As it got darker, we turned on our flashlights and started to look at the bottom of the pond. Hey – did you see something move there? We started to see occassional stirrings in the leaves on the pond bottom. Aha! Yellow-spotted salamanders! We started seeing them in the crevices along the edge of the pond, and on and under the leaf debris. Neat-o! We started seeing more and more salamanders. Wow – there’s a big one! These salamanders were about the length of hot dogs! It was very cool to be so close, and to see them swimming around. The salamanders were great, but we also happened upon a Spring Peeper, see here after being placed on a birch tree.
