Nature Guardians – Bird Song @ Blue Mountain

Date/Time

Saturday, May 21, 2022
All Day

Description

Spring is a great time to practice your bird songs! Let’s do a loop through the interior of BMBCL Wilderness Area and do a bird survey, practice our ID skills, and write up a report for eBird and our friends at the NS Bird Society. If we’re lucky, maybe we’ll hear some interesting warblers! I’ll bring photo and audio guides and, if the weather permits, we’ll give Nature Guardians the option to camp overnight and experience the dawn chorus on the 22nd. Be warned, experiencing the awesome dawn chorus of a bazillion migratory birds signing means getting up around 4am! That can feel especially early if an owl wakes you up at 1am! We’ll meet 2-5pm for our regular session and 5pm-9am for the overnight.

Supper, breakfast, and a night-time treat on the 21st will be provided but you might want to bring snacks for the rest of your time outside. Plus all the usuals: your warm layers, water bottle, extra pair of socks, etc. If you plan to stay overnight you will need to pack some extra items: sleeping bag & pillow, comfy sleep clothes, extra layers for cool weather, some hand sanitizer, and a roll of toilet paper! Blue Mountain is a pack-in/pack-out camping situation, so try to pack all the things you need but keep your bag lightweight. There are no facilities in these woods, so come prepared for a “rustic” overnight stay! We will be bringing home everything we bring into the woods with us, so keep it light, keep the garbage to a minimum, and make sure your bag is comfortable and sits properly on your back. We’ll go over pack strategies at the trail head.

We’ll be tenting in bubbles to mitigate the risk of COVID-19. Nature Guardians may bubble together with permission from their parents, but you are also welcome to go it alone if you’d prefer! Sometimes it’s really nice to have a tent to yourself!

On that note, we need to know if you can bring your own tent! Please RSVP for this Nature Guardians session early so we can plan to bring gear for any members who need it.

* We need a couple “grown-up” chaperones for the overnight portion of our outing! Reach out if you’d like to join your nature nut for overnight birding!

Our Nature Guardians program has a cap on the number of participants to maintain a safe and fun environment for our group. If you’re new to the program please reach out to Becky about joining us: yncns@yncns.ca
